This is Olivia, our friendly backyard Cat Faced Orbweaver Spider (Araneus gemmoides). She builds big beautiful webs right next to the deck stairs, is generally fascinating to watch, and gives me an excuse not to mow the lawn (lest I disturb her web). She’s a big girl, too- largest orbweaver I’ve seen in the Colorado area.

She also makes me seriously wish I had a camera with a good macro. I bet I could get some fantastic pictures of her -and her gorgeous webs- with some upgraded equipment. Of course, I’ve not stopped trying even wtihout an upgrade, but of dozens of pictures this is the only one even slightly presentable. Hopefully I’ll get on with that gainful employment thing before the season changes and she’s gone.

Huzzah for backyard wildlife.
